How Big Is God | How Big Is God |

Merry Christmas everyone! Psalm 8: 3-4 says, "When I consider the heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of Him, the son of man that you care for Him?" Perhaps you're a lot like me when it comes to explaining God to others. I often tell people that we serve a great big God, and, indeed He is! But, I wonder what children think when they hear a statement like that? They have a tendency to take things quite literally and so might just conceive of God as some monolithic giant. To them He probably has very large hands since we sing, "He's got the whole world in His hands." And, they may think He's got huge eyes as well since we say that He sees all. But have you ever stopped to think of just how big God really is? The Hubble Space Telescope has opened up a whole new dimension on that question. Let's take a quick trip through the universe He created and see just how big our God is.
Did you know the God created the earth to be 24,887.64 miles in circumference? The moon is 225,000 miles from us, and the sun is 93,000,000 miles from us. The outer most "planet" of our solar system, Pluto, (though there is now some debate about that) appears to be 3.7 billion miles from the sun. The nearest star He created to us is Alpha Centauri (of "Lost in Space" TV fame) is 4 light years away. Consider that a light travels 186,000 miles a second (or 6 trillion miles in a year) it means that the closest star to us is really 24 trillion miles away! If you traveled at the speed-of-light for a whole year, you'd only be at the edge of our own galaxy (the Milky Way - not the candy bar either) and there are literally billions of other whole galaxies in the universe!! And, traveling at the speed-of-light it would take you 2 million years to reach the nearby Andromeda galaxy.
Well, I could go further (pardon the pun)...but you get the idea! Anyway you cut it, it's mind blowing! And then on top of that consider that some experts say the universe is still expanding. So then, how big is our God? Let's just say He's big enough to handle any and all of your prayer requests, and to supply all of your needs too.
This Christmas season as you gather with family, give and receive gifts, slog through the snow, attend a Christmas program, etc. please also remember that He was small enough to fit inside a manger cradle and be "Emanuel - God with us." He's with you every moment of every day, including right now...talk with Him and seek Him (as the 3 wise men did) and remember God is bigger than all your problems and He's bigger than all your fears, and He cares for you!
Psalm 147:4-5 says, "He (the Lord) determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name. Great is our Lord and mighty in power; His understanding has no limit."
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Pastor Bomey
