What I Learned the Day My Son Went to War

See Amazon.com for books by Ron Burkhart.

At the time of my dad's younger days in North Dakota the church he grew up in was growing greatly. 80 years later there were only three churches of that denomination remaining in the state. The reason for the decline was that they lost their young people.

John 3:16: "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."

I understood that verse when my son was deployed to Iraq as a Marine Sergeant. There is no higher price of citizenship in this country than to offer up your child.

Great love cares about those who seem less desirable. Great love sacrifices for those who can not give back. Great love is always risky business because there might not be any payoff for the price paid.

In 1942 the transport ship Dorchester was hit by torpedoes and began to sink. The military chaplains give away their life vests not knowing if it would add up to anything of value.

Juan Garcia was shot by a sniper in Iraq. He had been led to the Lord by Rick. Rick came from a broken home and joined the Royal Ranger program. He was led to the Lord by Nate who had been a wild ruffian when he had come to the church. Someone took the time to care for Nate and led him to the lord in the church.

There was a 3 year old girl playing in the yard 60 years ago when someone saw her and decided to talk to her parents. They offered to take her to church if the parents would let them and the parents agreed. After a while the family moved away, but years later they moved back and the girl began walking to church. She did not become anyone famous, but I know her as Mom.
